Keeping Business Casual with Addition Elle's Michel Studio

One of my first blog posts ever on Geek with Style was about Michel Studio (before I changed the site name to “Geek with Style” even.) Four years ago I fell in love with a clothing line that would convey serious business woman, while simultaneously being super comfortable and fun to wear. I came across this line while looking for something to wear at Toronto blog conference, and felt that Michel Studio would be the perfect kind of comfortable throughout long days of keynotes and panel watching, but also keep the “Entrepreneurs” statement going. Its been my go-to line for

Incredibly Ridiculous Facebook App Noises, and How To Get Rid of Them

So yesterday had me standing around a local crafts store (for TWO whole hours,) while the nephew Kit sat in a classroom and had fun making art. For the first half hour, I went around the store and made a wish list of pretty much their entire stock of everything, ’cause this geek loves to get her craft on. But, staring at items I’d love to have, at prices that aren’t entirely in my current budget only lasts for so long. That means I spent the next hour and a half shifting restlessly from foot to foot while I gabbed

Sage 50: Keeping Canadian Small Businesses Financially Organized

Psst! I’ll let you in on a little secret. Ready for it? Okay, here it is! Professional blogging is not easy. It really isn’t. There is a lot that happens “behind the scenes”, that makes the act of blogging more than just writing and posting photos all day long. Like any small business, we have clients and overhead to manage. And boy, do they need to be managed and organized well; which is something that is definitely not my strong suit all on my own.  When it comes to tax time (two little words that can mean so much,) I need

#ComicBookClub: Signed All-New Hawkeye #1 Giveaway!

You may have noticed a few posts here recently about #ComicBookClub? I’m a big fan of book clubs, but it’s an easy bet that there aren’t many out there devoted to comic books. Or at least, I haven’t found one in my area yet to join. So I’m trying out a way to create a weekly book club here on Geek with Style! My hope is to find new comics to read through shared reviews each week; so if you write reviews of your favourite comics, I would like to encourage you to share the links to those reviews here

How to Get The Most of Your Julep Maven Box

I’ve been getting a lot of email and comments on how to improve Julep Maven Box selections after a few reveals shown on Instagram, particularly when one of my boxes came with dry shampoo. I honestly can’t get enough of my Julep Maven monthly subscription service, and a lot of that has to do with swapping out default items to receive a truly personalized box of goodies. Julep even has a way to skip a month to take a break from their program, but I haven’t used that option yet. I keep thinking, “This month I’ll take a break, I

REVIEW: Marvel's Secret Wars, Armor Wars #2 (Iron Man)

Two issues into a series based in Marvel’s Secret Wars: Battle World, and I’m entirely enjoying the story. I’m still attempting to understand the whole Battle World premise itself. If you’ve been following along in the world of Marvel Comics, what we knew of “our” earth Earth-616 and Earth-1610 couldn’t save the whole multiverse from imploding on itself, and we’re now left with one world that is a stitched up patchwork of all of these mostly destroyed earths that made up the multiverse. The Marvel multiverse is based on multiverse string-theory, the idea that there are parallel universes at play,

Try a Metro Master Class at Taste of Toronto this July

A couple weeks ago, I was invited to try my hand at a half-hour Metro Master Class to simultaneously celebrate the opening of a new boutique Metro at Humber Bay Park in the west end of Toronto, as well as the upcoming Taste of Toronto event happening this July 2nd to 5th! Thanks to Chef Elia Herrera (Executive Chef of Los Colibris and El Caballito,) 12 of us learned how to mash up a truly delicious guacamole. It’s an incredibly easy recipe that has quickly become a favourite dish to make at this Geek’s casa, but I wouldn’t have ever

Kingsman: The Secret Service Released on Blu Ray

Kingsman: The Secret Service released on blu-ray yesterday! If you haven’t seen this epic movie, it stars Colin Firth, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Cane and Taron Egerton, as Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin, the brilliant thug that quickly has aspirations to become a spy. This movie has all the things, including hilarious moments, jaw-dropping fight scenes, incredible female characters (it even passes the Bechdel Test,) amusing bad guys, and violence. Oh mah gerd, the violence. I don’t like violent movies usually. Frustratingly, my empathy goes haywire even over fictional characters, so watching any character die horribly is not my idea of a

Sun Awareness Week & 25 Years of Ombrelle

Did you know we have an awareness week for the sun from June 1st to 7th? Most of us see it everyday, or at least know its there, just behind the clouds (unless you’re reading this in Antarctica between the months of March and September,) but despite such familiarity, do you really know the sun? I’m seeing it’s work right now as I type up this article. I’m in my office with all of my lights off, simply as they’re not needed, while its such a gorgeous day outside. It’s bright and sunny both outdoors and inside my office as

Five Great Places to Explore In Toronto

Thanks to travel-pro Robin Esrock and Ford Canada, I’ve been entirely inspired to mock up an ongoing bucket list for myself. Having lived in Toronto for over 30 years, you’d think I’ve done it all in such a colourful, uber-busy city, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. It’s kind of an impossible task; there is just so much happening at any given moment of every day in this much loved urban landscape. I have blindly chosen my adventures so far, and thus am finding that there are some experiences I continue to miss year after year, simply due

Awesome App: Grabb Lunch Quickly in Toronto

Lunch hours can be a crazy thing, especially if you work in a fast-paced office in downtown Toronto. Before working as a Stay-at-Home-Entrepreneur, I did the Go Train mad-dash to and from Union Station, and it was always the beginning and end of the daily rush. I’ve been told that this rush and virtual strain to the mind-body-soul is a uniquely Toronto thing, at least for Canadians (I can imagine New York is just as keyed up as we are.) We Torontonians have places to go, people to see, like yesterday darn it, we’re perpetually late just by the standards and
