Movies are hands down, the easiest gift to buy when you’re in need of a quick, affordable present. Geeks and science fiction/fantasy movies go hand in hand. We eat the latest of cinematic effects technology up with a spoon. Star Wars Rogue One doesn’t release in theatres until this December, but you’ve probably been hearing all about it from your Geek for the entire year. There has been a recent batch of awesome movies released to DVD/Bluray/4K that your Geek will love which will earn you all kinds of points to level up on the I’m Awesome badge.
Science Fiction and Fantasty TV to DVD
At the moment, I could only find one recent TV Show release to DVD, and it’s one that definitely doesn’t disappoint.
Game of Thrones
[easyazon_image align=”center” cart=”n” cloak=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”B01H2JPULU” locale=”CA” localize=”y” nw=”y” nf=”y” src=”//geeklife.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/51gAUIFdaNL.jpg” tag=”geewitsty-20″ width=”404″]
#WinterIsComing – I type this while it’s unseasonably warm for mid-November, but the Starks will always be right at some point.
If your geek has been enjoying Game of Thrones on HBO (or CTV in Canada,) you cannot go wrong by picking up the most recent DVD release, just in time of the holiday season.
[easyazon_link identifier=”B01H2JPULU” locale=”CA” nw=”y” nf=”y” tag=”geewitsty-20″ cart=”n” cloak=”n” localize=”y” popups=”n”]The most-watched series in HBO history, this box set is jam packed[/easyazon_link] with bonus features that any fan will love, including audio commentary, behind-the-scenes featurettes (including a look into the Dothraki World, and an interesting piece on GoT’s prosthetics,) as well as deleted scenes to get an idea of what the writers and producers wanted to showcase. There’s always an incredible scene or two that winds up on the cutting room floor due to time.
Buying Tip: Turns out there are more features available on the Bluray set over the DVD box, so if your Geek has a Bluray player at hand (and they most likely do,) go for that version to gift!
Forged by a thousand (or perhaps two hundred swords), the Iron Throne has found its way to Toronto for a short time. From now until Sunday November 20th, 2016, you get a moment to act like the royalty you are and sit on quite an imposing arm chair.
WIN: I get to give a copy of the Game of Thrones Season 6 boxset to one lucky reader! It could be you! Keep reading to find out how to win.

List of Top Science Fiction and Fantasy Movies to DVD
Here’s a list of recently released to DVD movies that will be much loved by any Geek.
Alice Through the Looking Glass
Whimsy at its finest. Watch Alice escape back to Underland through the looking glass, just in time to save her friend the Mad Hatter.
[easyazon_image align=”center” cart=”n” cloak=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”B01EUBF5KO” locale=”CA” localize=”y” nw=”y” nf=”y” src=”//geeklife.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/61sBZCHwi8L.jpg” tag=”geewitsty-20″ width=”435″]
Ghostbusters
It’s the girls turn now. This movie should be awesome for everyone, but Jay and I have differing opinions. He feels the movie overkilled some jokes, or tried too hard. As a #GirlGeek with a penchant for paranormal “reality TV” (it’s like watching the Bachelor, but with an abundant of flashlights,) I was amazed at how much the technobabble was as accurate as one can get when you’re trying to prove the existence of ghosts.
[easyazon_image align=”center” cart=”n” cloak=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”B01IFLAI7U” locale=”CA” localize=”y” nw=”y” nf=”y” src=”//geeklife.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/612BMZ23GpXL.jpg” tag=”geewitsty-20″ width=”404″]
Batman: The Killing Joke
One of the most critically acclaimed stories in Batman lore. It defines the Dark Knight, his arch nemesis, and more importantly perhaps, the Chief Commissioner’s daughter. For someone who was never that big a fan of Batgirl, take it from me when I say this story will leave you with chills.
[easyazon_image align=”center” cart=”n” cloak=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”B01BQPZWIM” locale=”CA” localize=”y” nw=”y” nf=”y” src=”//geeklife.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/51asqDSayaL.jpg” tag=”geewitsty-20″ width=”396″]
Captain America: Civil War
Hero against hero. It usually sucks to see mom and dad fight, but Iron Man and Captain America certainly know how to go big or go home when their feelings are hurt.
[easyazon_image align=”center” cart=”n” cloak=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”B01D9EUMVA” locale=”CA” localize=”y” nw=”y” nf=”y” src=”//geeklife.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/51BdNPdHVkL.jpg” tag=”geewitsty-20″ width=”381″]
Star Trek Beyond
Amazing music, incredible fight scenes, and an all round fun time watching Kirk and his team do their best to get out of an impossible situation by the skin of their teeth.
[easyazon_image align=”center” cart=”n” cloak=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”B01IASIZ2S” locale=”CA” localize=”y” nw=”y” nf=”y” src=”//geeklife.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/61FwAliMJFL.jpg” tag=”geewitsty-20″ width=”379″]
Independence Day: Resurgence
Unapologetically as cheesy as its predecessor. Check your brain at the door, and enjoy a we versus them moment, with much better graphics.
[easyazon_image align=”center” cart=”n” cloak=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”B01HKH2GI4″ locale=”CA” localize=”y” nw=”y” nf=”y” src=”//geeklife.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/61aA5k25YfL.jpg” tag=”geewitsty-20″ width=”387″]
X-Men: Apocalypse
Nothing is ever easy for Professor X and his fellow mutants. This movie happily tears your favourite heroes and villains apart, leaving you wondering how can they save the world once more?
[easyazon_image align=”center” cart=”n” cloak=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”B01FV4LYWM” locale=”CA” localize=”y” nw=”y” nf=”y” src=”//geeklife.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/61kFxjzuELL.jpg” tag=”geewitsty-20″ width=”382″]
COMING SOON
Suicide Squad
On December 13 the craziest bunch of anti-heroes will be released to DVD, and it’s more than likely on your Geek’s want list.
[easyazon_image align=”center” cart=”n” cloak=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”B01JH20CCW” locale=”CA” localize=”y” nw=”y” nf=”y” src=”//geeklife.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/61QFD1Uf99L.jpg” tag=”geewitsty-20″ width=”396″]
