How to Style Up Your USB Cord Charger with Star Wars LEGO

How many charging cords do you have lying around? Do you sometimes lose them? Between four tablets, two netbooks, two smartphones, and a handful of portable USB chargers, Jay and I have quite a bit to keep powered up around our house. The numerous black cords have been known to coil menacingly like tiny, thin snakes, sometimes falling down to the floor, and have easily uglified the corner we’ve occupied for most of our charging needs.  I felt it was time to have a little fun with these necessary bits of tech, so while they’re still functional, they’re easier to look at too.

Who doesn’t love a good (or bad) Star Wars/Android pun?  I’ll admit, despite the box stating that this kit is good for those ages 6-12, I had fun connecting the LEGO bits together to make the Storm Trooper ship and the Droidekas. I’m pretty sure I had a zen moment when tackling the tiny ship, piece by piece (and I swear these kits get kids ready for those days they’ll have to put together an IKEA bookshelf all by themselves.)

Here’s a few more action shots…

There was a kind of zen when putting all the pieces together.

So yeah, if you want the same level of fun that I’ve been having, here’s the kit I picked up earlier this week.

This little project got me wondering what other cool ways I could keep my charges all together and happy, and not ugly, so here’s a few items I pinned on Pinterest.

Really love the idea of creating a charging drawer! That’s a project I’m going to talk to Jay about, ’cause we certainly have enough odd bits of tech to fill a drawer or two.

So, how are you handling your charging cords?

  • Those are great ideas!!! The LEGO ship is so cute! :) We have a few cords hanging around... I've tied twisties around some of our computer cables/lamp cords to keep them out of the way against the wall. We have fewer devices (so far) so that's not such a problem. :) Thanks for sharing!

    • Thanks Bonnie! :) Oh, twisties are great! Especially when desktop computer towers start to look more like octopi once all those paripherals are well connected - the cords can look like a disaster if left alone, lol.

  • Lego style? Love it! The only problem is my kids would likely be grabbing my cord keepers and walking off with them. But in my pre-mom days (when, ahem, there was PLENTY of Lego kicking around my apartment, thank you very much), this would have been the best idea ever.

    • LOL, yes, I am wondering how the nephew will be next time he visits and eyes up the LEGO bits. Though I do have it sitting on top of my comic book shelf, so I'd have to first worry about him touching my books to get to it. He knows not to touch auntie's books, heh. ;)

  • After watching Lego the movie I though those were pretty geeked out options. To be honest I am throwing the changing drawer on hubs to do list. What a great idea!

    • Ooh, I still have yet to watch The LEGO movie! Its in my Google Movie watch list, but just haven't found the time yet. And I'm currently hunting out which drawer to turn into a charging box; I've been thinking about it all night, lol.

  • Fellow geek and LEGO Star Wars mom here. These were awesome! I like to play guess which charger goes with which device. If I organized them, life would be so dull. :-D

  • LOL! Those look great! Unfortunately those wouldn't last long in my house! I know two little boys that would see them and run! lol!!

  • Very cute idea. Although mine would probably look at me and say "these are not the cords you are looking for"...

  • My boys love Lego and Star Wars so this would be a win-win. I will add it to our Christmas lists this winter.

  • How fun! We love all things Star Wars in our house and my boys are obsessed with Legos!!

  • Haha, what? That's too much fun! My son is Star Wars crazed and this sort of project is something I would do with him. I love the idea of getting creative for functional use. Also, the drawer idea is genius and would like to recreate that too.
