GLASS, the culmination of M. Night Shyamalan’s comic book superhero thriller was released on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD today!
The final note to Shyamalan’s Unbreakable series that debuted nearly twenty years ago.
Find out what happens when a genius mind sees life as if it played out as a comic book. Who are your supervillains? And who are your superheroes? And is the world ready for either?
Comic book lovers will truly rejoice with this third installment of the superhero-thriller series that began in 2000 with Unbreakable.
Here’s the thing about comic book movies in general…
They tend to be about gods, aliens, humans with god-like powers, humans with alien-powers, alien-gods who want to be human, etc.
We jump skyscrapers, from a seemingly human, humble beginning to the ultimate in believable disbelief.
But what about a more middle ground? What about a human that simply does something super?
What if some random simply had the ability to hear infrasound like a pigeon can? Are they super?
Tom Sietas and Stig Severinsen can hold their breath underwater for more than 20 minutes… are they superheroes?
What does one need to do to qualify? Do they have to be able to fly? Do they need laser eyes, or fingers or toes?
GLASS explores a world as real as our own, where capes and spandex aren’t a thing outside of brilliantly coloured comic book pages.
Nonetheless, three people think they’re super.
David Dunn (Bruce Willis), aka the Overseer, thinks he can kinda-sorta read peoples minds, believes that he’s unbreakable, unless you just add water.
He’s decided that his abilities are helping his community and local law enforcement in a vigilante sort of way. Watch Unbreakable (2000) for the full disclosure on David Dunn.
Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy), a young man doing his best to live life with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder, once known as multiple personality disorder). He has 24 clearly different identities, that collectively live in Crumb as The Hoarde, the most dangerous of them is The Beast.
While undoubtedly a dangerously human monster, did the Beast rise up above all others, developing superhuman strength and agility?
Watch Split (2017) for the truly breathtaking birth of The Beast.
Elijah Price, aka Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), is the self-professed evil mastermind.
Right from the beginning of Unbreakable, comic-book nerd Mr. Glass feels that he has been orchestrating the creation of superheroes into normal society.
Has he though?
Or did he just stumble upon some dudes with the highest of coincidences that should totally be featured in the next Guiness Book of World Records?
All that we’ve seen, heard and unquestioningly believed in Unbreakable and Split is questioned in GLASS.
Mr. Glass wants to take his comic book narrative to the next level though. He wants to prove his superhuman theory.
With the Beast’s help, Mr. Glass believes his next step is to destroy a formidable architectural feat, just because he can, all the while monologuing his intent to his arch-nemesis the Overseer for comic book integrity.
Can Dunn stop Mr. Glass and the Beast before it’s too late?
This movie will make you laugh and cringe, and possibly groan in frustration at times, particularly if you have a penchant for reading hero-based comic book stories.
After all of the conditioning we’ve willingly accepted as part of entertainment etiquette: don’t talk during the movie, turn off your too-bright phone, watch every second of the end-credits, because there might be one final scene… You might fully expect more from a superhero-thriller that had a $20 million budget, just because. But, that’s all part of the beauty of GLASS.
If nothing else, GLASS is an incredible film simply for the second opportunity to watch McAvoy run the gamut of maybe 20 of the 24 personalities of Kevin Wendell Crumb.
The rapid-fire change between characters is outstanding.
While the voices, inflections and intent are beautifully choreographed, it’s McAvoy’s micro expressions that steal the show, leaving me speechless and eager for more.
The way McAvoy can sit in a chair, and switch between personalities with no other prop than his face to announce which character he’s going to play next, should have had him drowning in accolades by now.
