So South St. Burger has got a new fan in a 6 year boy, named Kit. And hey, his Chachi (auntie… that’s me!) has been a fan for a while now, but certainly has a new appreciation for this burger joint that aims to make your burgers better. Kit is absolutely mesmerized with the idea that he can make his own delicious burger just the way he wants it, without any say from his parents, nor Chachi nor Chacha.

Want to add all the hot peppers in the world on your burger, Kit? Go right ahead. … He wouldn’t. His 2 yo younger brother, Oh Henry, just might though.

How did this come about?

Better Burger Bash

Kit and I were recently invited to a “Better Burger Bash” event, held by South St. Burger Co. This was the party to be at, as the fries and milkshakes were overflowing, and the burgers, oh the burgers, nom nom nom nom. They were delish.

And the kids got a chance to express themselves by designing their own burger.

Kit? Like always, he made me laugh.

He truly has a flare for burger design as he plops a thick slice of cheddar right on top of the burger (not below the patty, like commoners would,) layering two pickles on top, like a big X marking it’s spot.

I asked him if he wanted ketchup, and got a decisive nod in the affirmative, so I handed him one of those old, diner style, squeezable ketchup bottles.

Now, this kid will likely beat you at Super Marios Bros.

So, I was a bit surprised when he took the bottle, looked up at me and says, “I don’t know how to work this thing.”

I’m like, “Wha?”  Really?  Is it possible that in his six years, we’ve taught him how to hold both a wiimote, and a Xbox 360 game pad, but we’ve never let him pour his own ketchup?  Did we do that??

I found myself in the moment of teaching him the skill of pouring (squeezing) ketchup, thinking that maybe he was just confused over the different bottle shape from that of the brand we keep at home. I’ll hope and cling to that idea.

Kit put one dollop of ketchup on top of the crossed pickles. And I do mean “dollop” in the Merriam-Webster dictionary sense of the word, (and I’m absolutely laughing at example #4, heh.) It was maybe the size of a Canadian quarter.

Next was a smaller, nickle sized, dollop of mustard, followed by the largest leaf of lettuce I had ever seen. At this point, Kit decided he wanted mayonnaise, and skillfully added mayo to every ridge of the middle portion of his lettuce. He then let me fold his leaf in half, it was that big.

Finally, we found the pièce de résistance to his fabulous creation. Mango Chutney. Oohhhmmmmmmm.

South St. Burger’s Mango Chutney is so goooooood.

Kit added two dollops of that.

And then Kit thought that he could go sit down and eat his burger, but hah, no. No, he might not yet be used to the life of food with a blogger, but he will catch on quick soon.

We went over to a corner and had a photo taken of his burger.

Behold! The Lion Burger. Rawr.

Doesn’t that look all kinds of delicious? The mango chutney is making a valiant effort to escape.

But, that’s not going to happen, no.

Kit was the boss, and made sure the mango chutney knew it.

Needless to say, Kit had a blast that night, and I have a nice selection of photos that I’m planning to revisit when he’s seventeen. If you think I’m wearing an evil smirk right about now, you’re right.
